Color me shocked: WE ACTUALLY GOT THOSE BIG-ASS THUNDERSTORMS predicted by Weather.com! They started to blow through here around 5 p.m. with violently strong circular winds, sheets of heavy rain and plenty of noise and lightning. Mesquite survived unscathed except for two brief power outages; areas west of us — such as Arlington near Cowboys Stadium and snooty Highland Park — had considerable damage and about 250,000 residents are still without power. A couple of photos appear below in case you need to see this for yourself.
For your possible interest the following map indicates: A) Howdygram headquarters in Mesquite; B) Arlington; and C) Highland Park. The storms have passed but all of these locations are still very, very wet. (Wet is good.)
And now let’s discuss the elephant in the room here in Dallas: Ebola.
The CDC, Presbyterian Hospital and the Dallas Public Health Department can stage their press briefings and offer empty assurances that America isn’t Africa and our superior healthcare system can contain Ebola ... BUT I’M NOT BUYING IT, because Presbyterian Hospital sent the patient home with antibiotics the first time he showed up in the emergency room — even though he told the intake nurse he’d just arrived here from Liberia! — and the number of additional people being monitored locally for symptoms of the disease has already risen to 100, including several children at two public schools. Even worse, the patient’s family is on a quarantine lockdown in their apartment in north Dallas with an armed police guard and media choppers hovering overhead, a hazmat team hasn’t shown up yet to removed infected bed linens, towels and clothing worn by the patient before he was hospitalized four days ago, and nobody’s given any thought to delivering basic necessities like FOOD to these people. Holy crap.
I could barf every time Governor Rick “Hairdo” Perry — the Howdygram’s latest Putz of the Week and a well-known pathological liar — shows his bespectacled puss on the news to reassure the gullible Bubbas of Texas that our hospital safeguards are state-of-the-art and he’s got it all under control. Fat chance. Just two weeks ago a huge hospital in El Paso made headlines when they revealed that 700 newborns had been exposed to tuberculosis over the course of a whole year from an infected nurse who managed to report for work every day without ever taking the required TB tests.
I don’t want to sound like a paranoid schizophrenic, but if you bet on Texas to contain Ebola, YOU’LL LOSE. Rick Perry supports policies that let kids go hungry, refuses to pass safety regulations for explosive fertilizer storage facilities, he fights against funding public schools, fights against pre-K, he turned down federal funds for Medicaid expansion just to screw poor people, he lets dickhead civilian militias with assault weapons patrol the southern border, he sends kids back to Central America to die, he refuses to make clean needles available to addicts and he’s managed to shut down almost every women’s health center and abortion clinic in the state. There’s NO WAY emergency rooms in Texas are prepared (or motivated) to screen or save poor people who show up with symptoms of Ebola because sick people croak in waiting rooms every day of the year here trying to be seen by a doctor. We’re fucked.
FYI, the above photo was taken at a press conference earlier today when Governor Hairdo had some difficulty responding to intelligent questions. He’s as dumb as a box of rocks.
I promised the latest news about “Real Housewives of New Jersey” deadbeats Teresa and Joe Giudice, who were sentenced today in a federal court for admitting to bankruptcy fraud, wire fraud, bank fraud, mail fraud, income tax evasion and bootlegging following a 10-year white-collar “crime spree” of greed, ongoing bullshit and deception. (I might be kidding about the bootlegging part.) Teresa received a lenient 15-month prison sentence (it should have been TWO YEARS) and Joe received 41; each will have to pay almost $450,000 in restitution and $15,000 in fines, and Joe still owes $200,000 in unpaid back taxes. The judge agreed to let Teresa serve her sentence first so Joe can stay home with their four obnoxious daughters; at the completion of Joe’s sentence he’ll most likely be deported to Italy because the dumbass isn’t even a U.S. citizen.
I know I promised a movie review and another senior citizen recipe in this post but it’s almost midnight and I’m pooped. You’ll have to wait until tomorrow. Deal with it, okay?
