Now half an hour later — yep, it’s 7:15 p.m. — I’m still lying on the chaise, and Sam and I are horsing around with old “Twilight Zone” reruns on Netflix (God, some of those episodes are awfully peculiar). I’m waiting for my pain meds to kick in so I can sit up for dinner and spend a few hours at my computer. I’ve got some projects to finish up for The Howdygram Store.
I’ve promised myself to spend at least three hours every day working on all kinds of design projects for The Howdygram Store after saving up dozens and dozens of ideas during all those months — six, to be exact — that I couldn’t get to the study to use my iMac. The frustration was almost unbearable, people … and it felt like I was in prison.
So a couple of weeks ago when we finally set up my iMac workstation in the family room on a huge rolling computer desk, it was pure heaven. I’m not wasting another goddamn minute of my life! Here I am, designing things again ... creating screwy mugs and screwy cards. I’M HAVING SUCH A GREAT TIME!

There are only four new FREE FONTS for you today, but I have to admit … they’re extra-special. “Versica” has lots of of interesting styles, textures and hundreds of swashy things, “Electrica” is the perfect replica of my all-time favorite IBM Selectric typewriter with eight different weights and coordinating italics, “Virmana” has three fabulous styles for layering, and “Katahdin” is a nice weathered sans serif. Download links will appear below the graphic. Have a blast!
So here’s what’s going on right now at Howdygram headquarters. It’s 1:30 a.m. on Monday morning, Sam is still awake with me, we’ve been watching Amelia (2009) starring Hilary Swank and Richard Gere, and I’m eating a couple of hard-boiled eggs so I won’t starve to death. At this point I’d like to offer a few key highlights of the week ahead — and a few general musings — in neatly-subtitled paragraphs for your possible amusement. Thank you.
I DON’T EAT MUCH ANY MORE. And that makes good sense, really, because I don’t need to eat much any more. I don’t expend very many calories walking three feet to the bench and then three feet back to the chaise lounge. With a walker, no less. And my favorite meal is two sugar-free Popsicles!
ANOTHER WEEKLY “HOSPICE-PALOOZA” BEGINS A FEW HOURS FROM NOW. Basically, this means more nonstop visits from hospice staff … my C.N.A. shows up for bathing and hygiene at 10 a.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and my R.N. comes on Monday and Thursday (afternoons) to change the dressings on my thigh wounds and pressure sores. That pretty much keeps me “booked solid” here every day of the week except Tuesday (and also weekends unless I have a an emergency). FYI, it’s presently 6 o’clock Monday morning, and it just dawned on me that Sam and I pulled an all-nighter! (Yes, he’s still wide awake, too.)
I’M GETTING READY TO STUFF SOME BIRTHDAY CARDS RIGHT NOW. I’ve got about 19 cards left to mail to various friends and relatives for the rest of the year … August, September, October, November and December. However my fabulous “system” didn’t turn out to be as fabulous as I’d hoped, because I’ve had a little trouble keeping track of things this year. (Maybe because of my health issues … but I can’t be sure.) Before I continue composing this section, therefore, please refer to the mock-up list below.
I type my list for the year ahead organized in four columns: 1) birthdate; 2) the card design number that I’m sending; 3) how the card is signed … A is from “Marcy and Sam,” B is from “Auntie Marcy and Uncle Sam”; and 4) the first and last name of the lucky recipient. Then I order all my cards at the same time from The Howdygram Store when they go on sale at 50% off, usually the first week of November. (I order all of my holiday cards in November, too.)
Usually I order about 12 different designs every year some personalized from “Marcy and Sam” and the others from “Auntie Marcy and Uncle Sam.” You’d think this would be a no-brainer, but it’s NOT … because I also have to keep track of which card design I sent each person last year, and which design I sent each person’s spouse, so that nobody in the same family gets the same card twice. (It’s enough to make you blow your brains out.) This year, unfortunately, I ran short of “Marcy and Sam” cards. I NEED ONE MORE. Although I always have a few spare cards on hand — in case I discover a new relative hiding under a rock — right now all of them are repeats.
Show of hands, please … do you think you’d remember if you received the same birthday card from me TWO YEARS IN A ROW?

I’d better shut down my iMac and get a little sleep. It’s 7:45 a.m. Monday morning and I’ve been awake for 12 hours ... most of it spent right here staring at my computer. If I don’t try to move pretty soon I’ll end up with PETRIFIED KNEECAPS. (Oy.)
Thank you for reading this and thank you for trying to remember the Alamo whenever possible.
