Rasputin’s death scene is very satisfying, completely outrageous and 100% unforgettable.

I honestly don’t think I’m motivated enough to work on a Howdygram post right now, because I just spent the last couple of hours writing three (long overdue) emails and promised myself I’d kick back a little afterwards and watch one of my favorite culty old movies. I’m referring to Rasputin and Empress (1932) starring Ethel, Lionel and John Barrymore … the only time all three Barrymores shared the screen together. Wow, right?

RASPUTIN AND THE EMPRESS is an early talkies blockbuster about events leading up to the February 1918 Russian Revolution, the overthrow of the tsar and execution of the Romanov family. But the central figure here is definitely Rasputin (Lionel Barrymore with an excellent fake beard), the sex-crazed, egomaniacal Russian Orthodox freelance monk who finagles himself into the royal family, blackmails half the court, hypnotizes crown prince Alexei and manipulates Empress Alexandra. After the royal family finally gets wise to the corruption, Rasputin is murdered at a party in one outrageous, spectacular scene, where he’s beaten, stabbed, shot, bludgeoned with an axe handle, poisoned with killer cupcakes, shoved into a fire pit, thrown down a flight of cement stairs and then held underwater until he drowns in a pool of ice. Very satisfying, completely outrageous and 100% unforgettable. I LOVE IT! I could probably watch the second half of this movie every day for the rest of my life … with Donald Trump in Lionel Barrymore’s role!

Here are five unusual little free fonts I thought you might enjoy. Three are quirky display fonts — “Beautiful Mind,” “Clackulator” and “Brownie Milkshake” — plus a pair of interesting scripts. (Of the two scripts I think I prefer “Santiago.”) I’ll add download links after the graphic.

I’ve also got a bunch of nice seamless background patterns to share with y’all tonight. There are two different collections; both of them are hand-drawn. The collection shown on the left (see below) includes 36 patterns total; the collection on the right has 18 patterns plus several coordinating wreaths and bouquets.

In case you’re interested, I’ve got a number of disjointed and dissimilar topics to cover in this section, so pour yourself a lemonade and get comfortable, okay?

STORMS, STORMS, STORMS. You betcha … we’ve got weather! There’s been a steady flow of thunderstorms rolling through the Dallas metro area for the last few hours … nothing too severe, thank God, but they’re definitely noisy and definitely wet. And we’re expecting more of the same tomorrow and Friday. Unfortunately, it’s 2:15 a.m., Sam is asleep in bed and the lights in the family room have been flickering on and off. If we lose power, my oxygen concentrator will set off a shrieking siren (even louder than a smoke alarm) to alert Sam that I need my flashlight, more air and immediate attention.
A/C UPDATE. On Monday the owner of Metro Service HVAC was here to do an annual checkup of our 15-year-old central air-conditioning unit. This was a couple of years overdue (our bad), especially since I already had a suspicion that our house wasn’t cooling off this year as well as it used to. I was right …  it was almost 80° in here!

Metro diagnosed a substantial freon leak — plus ice all over the condenser coils that couldn’t be repaired — which led Sam to purchase a lovely new 5-ton (we have a big house!) AmeriStar central air-conditioning system. Installation is scheduled for Saturday. To help keep me cool in the meantime, Sam drove over to Lowe’s and bought a nice Pelonis 20-inch box fan for the family room, which is on the floor and aimed at my bed for the next couple of days. I’m a happy, breezy invalid … and also thankful that our A/C broke down now, when it’s in the 70s outside, instead of mid-July when it’s 105°! (Yes, Texas gets VERY hot.)
VARIOUS HOO-HAHS COMPLETED. Most of the activities in this section can be attributed to Sam. To the best of my recollection, this week he: 1) had his hair cut; 2) got our car smog-checked for the next 12 months; 3) took the same vehicle for an oil change; and 4) picked up an epic order from Wal-Mart. The Wal-Mart order included: a tasty Night Hawk Steak ’n Taters frozen dinner with real charcoal-grilled meat; Oscar Mayer hot dogs, Stouffer’s Classics Meatloaf; Great Value Beef & Bean Burritos; Great Value Pancakes & Sausages On-a-Stick; Green Giant Backyard Grilled Potatoes; Ben & Jerry’s ice cream; a New York Style cheesecake (does it have an accent?); Bear Creek “Darn Good” Chili; Rice-a-Roni in two flavors; Campbell’s Cream of Bacon, Cream of Sweet Corn, Vegetarian Vegetable and French Onion soups; Hormel Compleats Turkey and Dressing; a tub of potato salad; and a package of HomeStyle Harvest Twice-Baked Potatoes. (The twice-baked potatoes are INCREDIBLE.)
VARIOUS HOO-HAHS STILL TO COME. All that’s left on my agenda is “Project Runway” (tonight on Bravo) and another bathing and hygiene session on Friday morning with my favorite hospice C.NA., Leticia.

It’s finally time for a couple of Popsicles and this week’s episode of “Project Runway,” and if I can fit it in afterwards I might remember the Alamo, but I wouldn’t necessarily count on it. Thank you for reading this!
