Without creative projects to work on I probably would have died from monotny.

Good afternoon, boys and girls. It’s late Friday afternoon and I just woke up from a very lovely, very long nap. Eight glorious hours. It could have been even longer, however, if our landscapers hadn’t showed up. (They’re mowing, edging, sweating, shouting and whacking. There’s a lot of fucking commotion out there.) Lately I’ve been keeping a “graveyard shift” schedule … falling asleep right after breakfast and waking up around 5 p.m.

Another day, another herd of free fonts! These really run the whole gamut today, from scripts (“Brayles” and “Amirul”), quirky display fonts (“The NightMare”), hand-drawn fonts (“Mittens”) and a poster font (“Rita”) with lots of additional styles. You’ll find download links after the graphic in case you want any of these for thoughtful (and very cheap) hostess gifts or your own personal collection.

I know 99% of you probably won’t give a crap about this, but a couple of months ago I bought a “bundle” package of digital artwork from Creative Market. This includes more than 1,200 high-resolution background images that I’ve been using for product designs for The Howdygram Store … for greeting cards, iPhone cases, mouse pads, spiral notebooks, clipboards, checkbook covers, playing cards, coasters, light switch covers and more. I’m feeling so damn inspired! As soon as I finish this post I want to spend the rest of the weekend working on some new designs. To tell you the truth, without creative projects to work on for the last few years I probably would have died from monotny or driven poor Sam crazy.

Here are a smattering of the images in that aforementioned digital artwork bundle. Are these gorgeous, or what?

By now most of you know that Sam escapes from Howdygram headquarters every morning before dawn to walk in the woods and enjoy our Texas sunrise. Occasionally he remembers to snap some pictures for me if the cloud formations are phenomenal, and yesterday was one of those days. Here’s the best of yesterday’s photos, which I touched up in Photoshop with an “oil painting” filter. Check it out:

So here’s what’s going on tonight at the Howdygram’s nerve center. It’s a few minutes past 10 p.m., and I’ve eaten practically NOTHING since 4:30 this morning. I tried to eat dinner but gave up almost immediately when I got slammed with more of those miserable swallowing issues after only two stinking bites of food. I got frustrated and depressed, so Sam decided to let me work it out on my own while we watched today’s “People’s Court” episode, our favorite “Bar Rescue” rerun*, and the Jack Benny movie The Horn Blows at Midnight (1945) co-starring Alexis Smith.

Yes, we have a favorite rerun. It’s the episode called “Schmuck Dynasty” about three pathetic brothers on Staten Island who allowed a mob of local bikers to take over and ruin their entire bar. We love this episode so much we could watch it every day.

Since several hours have elapsed with no additional digestive difficulties I’ll have to wake Sam from his nap in a few minutes to ask for some food. I’ll make it as uncomplicated as possible … I want a NIGHT HAWK TOP CHOP’T FROZEN DINNER, which is frequently an elderly person’s best bet for tasty, late-night, extremely decent food.

All of Night Hawk’s teeny frozen meals are charcoal-grilled chopped steaks with your choice of accompaniments: 1) corn niblets; 2) macaroni and cheese; 3) Texas barracho beans with corn bread; 4) mashed potatoes; or 5) Tater Tots. They’re all very, very good, and they’re all ready in less than five minutes in the microwave … the perfect choice for housebound senior citizens like yours truly who can’t stand up any more to cook things.

I always keep one or two Night Hawk meals in the freezer due to unexpected food cravings at weird hours and wanting to keep it simple for Sam, who’s my full-time chef. The Howdygram is pleased to award Night Hawk’s Top Chop’t Frozen Dinner with its coveted five-chopper rating. Buy one soon at your local supermarket … although there’s a possiblity these are only available here in Texas, because I believe I read recently that Night Hawk used to be a chain of popular steakhouses here. (If you can’t find Night Hawk in your local supermarket, now you know why.)

Tonight I’ll be working on my next Wal-Mart grocery order for pickup on Monday. Already on the list is a tub of Blue Bunny low-fat, sugar-free Double Strawberry Swirl ice cream … because I love ice cream, it’s the middle of summer, and why the hell not!

Other products on Monday’s grocery list include:
  • Sea Pak Beer Battered Jalapeño Crab & Cheese Poppers
  • Deli potato salad
  • Bob Evans Sour Cream and Chive Mashed Potatoes
  • Grated parmesan cheese
  • Great Value pasta sauce
  • Great Value shell pasta
  • Stouffer’s Fried Chicken frozen dinner
  • Night Hawk Top Chop’t frozen dinner with mashed potatoes
  • Stouffer’s Spaghetti with Meat Sauce frozen dinner
  • Louisiana Fish Fry Tartar Sauce
  • Frozen steak fries
  • Crystal Light Sugar-Free Fruit Punch
  • Crystal Light Sugar-Free Strawberry Orange Banana Drink
  • Knorr Tomato Pasta Soup Mix
  • Heinz Chili Sauce
  • Hormel Compleats Chili with Beans
  • Banquet Frozen Chicken Pot Pie
  • Banquet Frozen Salisbury Steak Pot Pie
  • Great Value Secret Sauce (I wouldn’t joke about this)
  • Frozen peas (three bags)
  • House of Tsang Spicy Szechwan Sauce
  • Diet A&W Root Beer
  • Great Value Sugar-Free Iced Tea (two gallons)
  • Kraft French Onion Dip
  • Kraft Green Onion Dip
Pictured above from top to bottom are bottles of Great Value Secret Sauce (I told you I wasn’t joking!), Louisiana Fish Fry Tartar Sauce and Heinz Chili Sauce. I want to use Great Value Secret Sauce on my hamburgers because it’s similar to the sauce that McDonald’s slaps on their Big Macs.

As for Heinz Chili Sauce, it’s very versatile. I’ll use it for sloppy Joes from now on — instead of Manwich — with the Ground Beef Textured Vegetable Protein sitting in the pantry. Heinz Chili Sauce has a better flavor, and mom always used it for sloppy Joes when I was a kid. And it just occurred to me … back in the 1950s and 1960s I remember a Wimpy’s Hamburgers restaurant in downtown Chicago, and Wimpy’s served their burgers with Heinz Chili Sauce! It’s definitely better than ordinary ketchup. Try it sometime.

Thank you for reading this. I’ll get back to whining about my health in the next Howdygram post.
