I’ve been re-learning how to eat chicken noodle soup.

MONDAY, 11/13/2018, 4:17 P.M. Know what I’ve been up to today? I’ve been re-learning how to eat chicken noodle soup. There’s a definite trick to this when you’re bedridden, people, and you need a special kind of bowl and different utensils. A few days ago I told Sam I really miss eating hot soup — I love hot soup! — since I’ve been confined to a hospital bed in the middle of our family room, so I decided to figure out how to make it happen.

The answer? I ordered a swell set of sturdy stainless steel spoons on Amazon, a lot like those ceramic soup spoons you use in a Chinese restaurant. And they work in bed! They’ve got a different shape and different handle angle than regular tablespoons. Only $9.98 for six.

High-quality stainless spoons with a terrific shape for soup. From Amazon.

In addition to a different-shaped spoon you also need a different bowl to eat soup in bed … so Sam delivers mine in a small plastic mixing bowl with a decent handle on it. I bought these about a year ago from Wal-Mart. Only $15.97 for the whole set, AND it’s microwave-safe!

A nice set of plastic mixing bowls with handles from Wal-Mart.

The only thing that’s left for me to learn is how not to tilt the bowl while I’m eating. I dumped scalding hot soup down my neck — and all over my nightgown, my nice clean blanket and my face — TWICE while I was trying to eat lunch today. I guess I’ve still got some work to do. Stay tuned. I hope  you can stand the suspense.

Do NOT dump this on your neck.

It’s 8:30 Monday night, Sam is asleep on the sofa, and I’m watching They Were Expendable (1945) starring John Wayne and Robert Montgomery. I’m also HUNGRY. But before I wake Sam and hit him with my announcement (food) I have to decide what, exactly, I want to eat. To help with these after-hours decisions I keep a running inventory on my laptop listing what’s in the pantry, the freezer and the refrigerator. Right now I think I either want Stouffer’s Salisbury Steak (a nice frozen entree-for-one) or a can of tamales.

Yes, I like canned tamales. (Deal with it, okay?)

TUESDAY, 11/14/2018, 9:06 A.M. It’s a beautiful, sunny, seriously cold (only 30°) November morning here in the Lone Star State, and Sam is organizing the pantry. (He just discovered two cans of Vienna sausages and a box of instant Cream of Wheat. My life is complete.)

So what’s on the schedule today? My hospice C.N.A. will be here at 10:30 for a bathing and hygiene session, and I also want her to wash my hair with one of those no-rinse shampoo caps that I buy from Amazon. Immediately afterwards I’ll treat myself to an early lunch followed by several hours of creative time on my iMac. I’ve been designing holiday greeting cards and a new line of custom iPhone cases for The Howdygram Store. Also a few new mugs. As soon as I have some products to show off I’ll post them here. And in case you’re interested, this would be an excellent time to start shopping for the holidays (including holiday cards), so CLICK HERE to visit my store on Zazzle.com and spend a little money.

Thank you for reading this.
