To amuse ourselves Sam shared a link to the following YouTube video … it’s a wacky little animated thing about “round animals,” and I hope y’all will enjoy it as much as we did. (I especially love the scenes with the ZEBRAS and COWS. Keep an eye out for them.) Please note that YouTube is a fabulous source of free entertainment during the Coronavirus lockdown. We highly recommend “What’s My Line” TV reruns from the 1950s and videos of classic commercials.
You can also find feature-length movies to watch … or special scenes that were saved for posterity. For instance, here’s a fantastic clip from The Seven Little Foys (1955) featuring Bob Hope (as Eddie Foy) and James Cagney (as George M. Cohan) dancing together for the first and last time. Apparently Cagney, years later, told a reporter that he was already crippled with arthritis when he agreed to do this scene with Bob Hope and wound up in severe pain for several weeks afterwards. In this scene Cagney recreates his own dance number as Cohan from Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942). Take a look.
And now … more FREE FONTS! I only have a handful for you today, however. They include a few pleasant scripts, a pair of display fonts (“Moomycraft,” “Best Friend Forever”) and a layered font (“Grandes”). They’re nice, aren’t they? If any of them interest you I’ll add download links after the list.
This time I’ve got at least a million new digital background images to share with you, the result of a rather substantial splurge this afternoon on Etsy.com. One of my favorite shops (Julie Campbell Designs) had everything discounted by 50% today, so I figured this was a terrific opportunity to grab 14 gorgeous collections for only 99¢ each. Woo-hoo! These images are all seamless, sparkly and splendid, and I can’t wait to start designing new iPhone cases and greeting cards for The Howdygram Store.
In case any of you are familiar with Thornton Wilder’s play Our Town, for the last couple of weeks Sam and I have been binge-watching the 1940 Best Picture nominee starring William Holden, Martha Scott and an incredible cast of Hollywood’s best character actors (Fay Bainter Beulah Bondi, Thomas Mitchell, and so on.) Our Town is an amazingly poignant and authentic look at small-town life at the turn of the 20th century … even if Hollywood fudged the ending so Emily Gibbs wouldn’t die in childbirth (she dies in the original play). If you’ve never seen Our Town, please do yourself a favor … rent it, borrow it, steal it, shell out a few clams for the DVD or try to find the movie on YouTube. You’ll thank me for this recommendation. Seriously.
In addition to Our Town’s nomination for Best Picture, Martha Scott received a nomination for Best Actress. Although the movie didn’t win in either category, the Howdygram is pleased to award Our Town with a five-star rating. ★★★★★ This is our highest hoo-hah.
And now for a peek at the week ahead … although this being Thursday there’s not very much of it left at this point.
THURSDAY, APRIL 23. A couple of deliveries are arriving this afternoon: 1) Sam’s new iPhone case, which was designed by yours truly for The Howdygram Store; and 2) I can’t remember the other one.
FRIDAY, APRIL 24. We’re expecting a pair of fantastic deliveries and one meh visitor on Friday. Taking the last one first, the meh visitor, who is also my hospice R.N., will drop in for my weekly checkup sometime in the afternoon. And regarding the two fantastic deliveries — nine jars of pitted Greek olives from Wal-Mart and two pounds of gorgeous kishka from Liebman’s Deli (via Goldbelly.com) in New York — they will brighten my frustrating little life considerably for several days afterwards. ESPECIALLY THE KISHKA … which even includes A BUCKET OF GRAVY!
SATURDAY, APRIL 25. I have nothing much to say about Saturday, because weekends are even more low-key at Howdygram headquarters than Monday through Friday. However … we’re expecting a rather large shipment of “silky three-ply Japanese toilet paper” (do you think I would joke about this?) on Saturday, which I ordered from Amazon during the first two days of the Coronavirus outbreak when American couldn’t find any toilet paper in the grocery stores. So Amazon says our fancy Japanese toilet paper will arrive on Saturday.
