An oxygen cannula delivers “forced air” up your nose but has a few drawbacks.

Happy Tuesday morning from Howdygram headquarters. It’s almost 2 a.m., Sam is in bed, and I’m enjoying a few hours of quiet time with a brand new creative project for The Howdygram Store (details follow). In the meantime I’d like to tell you what’s been going on around here.

This was a very huge hoo-hah … we had a NEW ROOF installed on Saturday! It was an all-day — 12-hour! — event that got underway shortly after 7 a.m. with a dozen noisy workmen, truckloads of shingles and a mountain of building materials. Photos appear below for your possible interest.

But wait … there’s more! A line of severe thunderstorms plowed through here early Sunday morning, beginning with a massive power outage at 4 a.m. that lasted SEVEN HOURS. Trust me, losing power sucks when you’re bedridden at home and your only source of oxygen is plugged into a wall outlet! Some key features to consider …
  • It was 90° outside.
  • We had no air conditioning and no ceiling fans.
  • There was no way to heat or cook any food, although eventually I had to ask Sam to open a can of Loma Linda Swiss Stakes for me so I could eat them at room temperature. Not very appealing but at least I didn’t starve to death.
  • I was sweaty and miserable and couldn’t adjust my hospital bed to get comfortable.
  • Sam repeatedly tried calling the electric company hotline for status reports, but his iPhone was almost dead and he had no way to recharge it.
  • When we lost power we had two emergency battery-powered oxygen canisters in the closet, but one ran out of air after 15 minutes so Sam called the hospice to send us more. Two hours later their medical supplier delivered 10.

ROUTINE HOSPICE CHECKUPS AND HYGIENE VISITS. On Wednesday and Friday I’m expecting visits from my hospice C.N.A. for bathing and hygiene activities — including medicated powder, skin moisturizer and a shampoo on Friday! — and also two visits from my hospice L.V.N. for boring little routine checkups. I guess it’s nice to have company once in a while, right?

A MONTHLY VISIT FROM OUR HOSPICE SOCIAL WORKER. She’ll be here this afternoon at 3 p.m. Sam and I really enjoy spending time with Theresa!

RELATIVES FROM CALIFORNIA. Sam’s older brother Steve and his wife, Therese, will be in Dallas this weekend to visit friends on the north side of town, but they’re coming over for lunch at 12:30 on Saturday. Sam and I will bring in some authentic Texas cuisine — BARBECUE! — and spend the afternoon catching up a little. I haven’t seen Steve and Therese since we moved away from southern California in 2007.

Know what? I think I have PSORIASIS … itchy, scaly, ugly patches of weird skin in various places all over my body, such as on my arms, inside my elbow creases, on the sides of my thighs, between my fingers and under my boobies. Most people can’t see any of this crud, of course, because I’m covered up in bed, but it drives me nuts just the same. (The patches are itchy, ugly and annoying. Blecch!) According to the Mayo Clinic’s online medical library, psoriasis is linked to type 2 diabetes, yeast, my shitty immune system and even a possible vitamin D deficiency, although hospices never do any blood work so I have no idea whatsoever if vitamin D is a “thing” with me or not. When I see my R.N. next week I’ll ask her to take a look at everything and order a topical medication for me.

Also, I’m still having ongoing issues with NASAL HEMORRHAGING. Every few days I experience a large volume of red blood whenever I blow my nose. (If this sounds repulsive, you’re correct … it IS.) Wearing an oxygen cannula 24/7 to deliver “forced air” up your nose has a few drawbacks, and this is definitely one of them.

Jesus. It’s always something, isn’t it?

In case you’re wondering … Sebastian Grey (see inset, below) won Season 17 of “Project Runway” in the big grand finale last week. This was actually a very huge deal due to Sebastian’s life story. He emigrated from Colombia about seven years ago and has been cleaning hotel rooms to support himself and design clothes in his spare time … and he was still doing this when Season 17 kicked off three months ago.

Sebastian’s prize package included $250,000 to launch his own business, a $40,000 sewing studio and $50,000 to set him up on the Internet. I’m pretty sure he’s finally through scrubbing toilets. Woo-hoo!

You probably won’t believe this, but the newest product in The Howdygram Store is INFANT BODYSUITS. I designed one a few days ago as a baby shower gift (for my best friend’s upcoming grandchild) and it turned out so cute I decided to try a few more. Thirty designs later I had a whole new category for my store (“Bundle of Joy”) and a chance to add other baby-related products as well, such as pacifiers and teeny little hats!

FYI, bodysuits come in four colors … pink, blue, heather gray and black.

Thank you for reading this. It’s nap time.
