We’re expecting visitors!

It’s another hot and sweaty autumn Sunday in north Texas — 98° with substantial humidity — and Sam is vaulting around the house doing a few miscellaneous “clean-up” chores. You know, folding the afghan in the family room, unloading the dishwasher and re-folding the fingertip towels in the hall bathroom. Wonder why? WE’RE EXPECTING VISITORS!

Later this afternoon my cousin Karen and her husband Ron are flying in from the Detroit area for a two-day visit. I guess my September 9 Howdygram post flipped them out. (Actually, I guess it flipped everybody out.) Karen and Ron will be staying at the Holiday Inn Express adjacent to the Mesquite Rodeo, pictured below for your possible interest. It’s a nice property with an outdoor pool and a free breakfast that everybody raves about online. Who knew that free corn flakes could ever be such a big fucking deal.

Here’s a map that denotes the following points-of-interest: A) the Mesquite Rodeo, Mesquite Convention Center and assorted snazzy hotels, including the Holiday Inn Express pictured above; B) Howdygram headquarters; C) one of many cattle ranches in Sunnyvale, with genuine mooing and picturesque steer with real horns; and D) the Chinese buffet at Tripp and Galloway where Sam always refused to eat. It’s been more than 10 years and I can’t believe I’m still upset about this!

Incidentally, it’s been 30 years since I’ve seen Karen and Ron. I think it was way back in 1989 when my first husband and I moved to Sparta, Michigan, a very teeny — population 4,140 — and very boring little town on the west side of the state that made Mayberry look like Manhattan. Karen and Ron drove from Detroit (about 165 miles, depending on which freeway you used to avoid Lansing) and spent a couple of days with us. That was the last time I saw them. And a couple of years later was the last time I saw my first husband! (Sparta was so awful I wanted to blow my brains out. I filed for divorce instead and moved to southern California.)

So, I’ve got more free fonts this morning! I’m especially proud of this little group … three hilarious cartoon dingbats fonts plus a sans serif — “Dealerplate” — that’s actually a direct copy of our license plate font here in Texas. I’ll include download links below. You’re welcome.

In case you’re interested, here’s an example of the “Dealerplate” font on a Texas license plate. Is this terrific, or what?

At the moment it’s 6:15 Monday morning, Sam is out for his first walk of the day and I’m in bed with an eyebrow tweezer and big glass of iced tea. Sam promised to make two grocery stops for me on his way home, which will probably be about an hour from now. STOP #1: From Wal-Mart I want sugar-free soda pop — A&W Root Beer and Sunkist Orange — in 20-oz. bottle six-packs. STOP #2: A nice pumpkin pie from Tom Thumb with a container of Cool Whip if we don’t already have enough in the refrigerator. (We’ll share the pie.)

I don’t eat much any more and my blood sugar is already completely out of whack, so I suppose I might as well start enjoying myself.

The blood sugar issue really has me flummoxed. I tested it this morning and the meter reading was 421. That’s horrible! I don’t eat … why should it be so damn high? I use an insulin pen every night at bedtime (Lantus SoloStar long-acting overnight insulin) and mealtime insulin (Humulin R) whenever I eat carbs. This combination has worked together beautifully for YEARS … what the hell happened?! If Lantus can’t do the job any more I might stop using it altogether. We’re spending $540+ for a 90-day supply … and that’s just the co-pay!

I think I’ll finish watching a musical while I wait for Sam to get home … Good News (1947) starring Peter Lawford, June Allyson and Joan McCracken. Woo-hoo!

Karen and Ron will probably be here by 10 a.m. Thank you for reading this.
