Take care of your teeth … you’ll miss ’em when they’re gone.

It’s a bitter cold and overcast Monday morning here at Howdygram headquarters … about 34° with plenty of clouds. Tonight it will drop to freezing; tomorrow we’re expecting significant thunderstorms. This is an excellent situation, and I’m not complaining because we really need rain around here. Bring it on!

Because I’m basically an invalid now and require a caregiver 24/7, Sam and I have been trying to plan for emergencies in case something unexpected happens to him — an accident, an illness, a hospitalization — and I need immediate help here at home. So … I decided to start with the most logical resource this morning and called my Medicare Advantage plan insurer (Scott & White) to find out who they recommend on short notice and what my financial obligations would be.

Glorioski and holy shit … I just learned that I’m covered for UNLIMITED HOME HEALTH CARE with NO CO-PAY whatsoever! Woo-hoo! The agent I spoke to gave me the names and numbers of two local home care agencies — Physicians’ Choice and We Care Home Health Services — and all of a sudden I feel very protected and a lot less vulnerable. If anything were to happen to Sam I’d need someone here to help me at least eight hours every day. Yes, people, it’s really that bad. Oy.

For your possible interest I’d like to provide a quick rundown of our weekend activities and projects, organized into neat subtitled paragraphs. Thank you.

GOT STARTED ON OUR 2017 TAXES … but we couldn’t finish because certain statements and documents won’t be available from our Vanguard funds until mid-February.

SAM MADE GOURMET OMELETS FOR LUNCH YESTERDAY. These were fluffy four-egg omelets with pepper jack cheese, red bell pepper and minced onion. Sam did such an amazing job that I might have to request an omelet at least once a month for the rest of my life!

WATCHED MY FAVORITE ESTHER WILLIAMS MOVIE. It’s Million Dollar Mermaid (1952) co-starring Victor Mature and Walter Pidgeon, the true story of Australian swimming sensation Annette Kellerman, who launched “daring” one-piece swimsuits for women at the turn of the 20th century and founded the sport of synchronized swimming. In case you care, my second-favorite Esther Williams movie is Thrill of a Romance (1945) co-starring Van Johnson because they have such amazing screen chemistry and Esther wears terrific clothes.
I STARTED WORKING ON MY VOTE-AT-HOME BALLOT for the Democratic primary election coming up in March. The ballot is huge this time … three 8½" x 14" pages! You may not be aware that I’ve been voting at home for several years already, and personally I think the process is so easy and so awesome that EVERYBODY should do it. Imagine never standing in line again at a polling place on Election Day, fighting lousy weather or risk being late for work! I just submit a request for mail-in ballots on a simple form right after the first of every year and the rest happens like clockwork. Contact your county’s Board of Elections or check their website for information.

WE DIDN’T WATCH THE SUPER BOWL. No further explanation needed.

In other news: 1) next week I’m expecting my two new pairs of glasses; 2) I’ll call Mobile Vision to come over and fit them for me; 3) in about five weeks I’ll see my visiting dentist again to take an impression for a lower denture; and 4) in my next Howdygram post I’ll introduce an exciting new vocabulary feature called LET’S LEARN YIDDISH.

Take care of your teeth … you’ll miss ’em when they’re gone. Thank you for reading this.
