I’ve discovered the best canned tamales!

Happy Sunday and hi-de-ho from Howdygram headquarters! It’s nearly 9 a.m. and I thought I’d start the day with some weird yet random thoughts, illuminated below in nicely-subtitled paragraphs. You’re welcome!

I DON’T FEEL LIKE SHIT TODAY. It’s a mystery. When I woke up this morning at 8:15 I had no  noticeable pain aside from stiff knees. No toe pain, no foot pain, nothing going on with my heels, no muscle pain in my legs, no hip pain, no “electric shocks” from diabetic neuropathy, no headache … NO NOTHING!

THIS IS THE CLASSIC DEFINITION OF “BLINDSIDED”. A few weeks ago I mentioned that Sam landed a  really cool, plum part-time job — advertised as “12 to 20 hours a week” — ushering at The Meyerson, which is the Dallas Symphony’s concert venue [see earlier post]. On Thursday he was fitted for his tuxedo, and Friday night, after spending three hours in an orientation meeting, his boss distributed the ushers’ work schedules for the next two weeks. Starting today they’re expecting Sam to work EIGHT DAYS IN A ROW, with one shift starting at 7 a.m. (tomorrow) and others lasting more than seven or eights hours. WHAT THE FUCK KIND OF PART-TIME JOB IS THIS?! The work schedule Sam received on Friday is essentially a full-time job with no benefits! After we talked about this on and off all day yesterday, Sam decided to resign this morning via email and a voice mail message. Oy, this is such a disappointment.

I’VE DISCOVERED THE BEST CANNED TAMALES. And they’re not Hormel’s. The best canned tamales are from Nalley’s! They’re absolutely terrific, and you can buy them online from Wal-Mart. Compared to Hormel, Nalley’s has more beef, softer corn meal and better-tasting gravy, and as a bonus they’re even a little cheaper! I ordered four cans this morning plus two cans of La Preferida’s Spanish rice because it looked so pretty. (I’ve never tried canned rice before. Have you?)
I MISS HOMEMADE POTATO SALAD because I haven’t been able to stand up in the kitchen to cook anything for at least six years. Therefore I thought I’d try making my own potato salad  again, but this time with CANNED DICED POTATOES in addition to my other favorite potato salad ingredients ... chopped hard-boiled eggs, diced celery, diced bell pepper and diced red onion, and Marcy’s World-Famous Secret Potato Salad Dressing (mayonnaise mixed with some “juice” from a jar of green olives and a nice dash of Lawry’s salt). None of this should be too difficult to achieve. Sam can buy the fresh produce at Wal-Mart and I’ll just sit at my desk in the study and dice everything. And we already have a bag of peeled hard-boiled eggs in the fridge!
TRY TO LEARN SOMETHING. Here’s my #1 favorite senior citizen helpful hint! The easiest way to chop up hard-boiled eggs is in a plastic mixing bowl with a traditional “pastry cutter.” It does a great job … even if you’ve got arthritic hands!

I KNOW WHAT I WANT FOR HANUKKAH THIS YEAR. I want Donald Trump and his repulsive, greedy offspring to DISAPPEAR FOREVER. Out of the White House, out of Washington, out of politics, gone from TV. Gone from EVERYTHING. Robert Mueller has had long enough to put the pieces together. Today is October 15 and Hanukkah starts on December 12. That gives Mueller two months to bring this shit to a head. PLEASE!

I want to encourage you to start programming your DVR for the rest of October and the first few days of November. There are lots of Marcy-approved classic films coming up on TCM and I want to list them for you here so you won’t miss anything. I should also mention that October 25 marks the 100th anniversary of the Russian Revolution, and there are two movies on October 25 that you shouldn’t miss: Nicholas and Alexandra and Rasputin and the Empress. Nicholas and Alexandra is a lavish Technicolor spectacle with millions of costumes and amazing performances. Rasputin and the Empress tells the sordid story of the “Mad Monk” (Lionel Barrymore) and his weird, manipulative relationship with Russia’s royal family. I especially love how Rasputin dies at the end. (SPOILER ALERT: Stabbed! Clobbered! Shot! Strangled! Drowned! Poisoned  by cupcakes!)

And now it’s finally time for some pleasant drugs and an afternoon nap. Thank you for reading this and please remember the Alamo if it’s not too much trouble.
